As a kid, Emily needed to do lots of things. It started at 3 years old with kalisthenics and roller skating and spiralled down the path of tap, ballet and jazz. She also trained musically from a young age.
After school, she focused on piano studies at the Queensland Conservatorium (B.Mus.) but a badly torn finger tendon led to a career change and she became an engineer... which ironically led her back to dancing. A friend encouraged her to take a belly dance lesson. It felt like coming home.
From 2007, Emily learnt from the Academy of Middle Eastern Dance (AMED) and the Queensland Bellydance Academy in Brisbane studying oriental Egyptian bellydance including modern and folkloric styles. In 2013, Emily found American Tribal Style (ATS)® and began learning from Rita the Hush Gypsy and formed Dark Nile with Alice.
In 2015, she trained with Carolena Nericcio-Bohlman and Megha Gavin to recieve General Skills and Teacher Training in ATS®, the international tribal bellydance language.
Emily loves bringing together dynamic moves with elaborate costuming and exiting music. She also loves dacning with props such as swords, fanveils and finger cymbals (zills).
Dark Nile is Emily's boiling pot where she can chuck in all the dance things, splash in some jazz and sparkles with lashings of dark beauty. She aspires to create beautiful, unique, challenging and accessable dances in this modern style of ancient art.
About bellydance with Emily
What I love most about bellydance is that it's for everyone. Everyone age, shape and ability. The movement is ancient, originating from Egypt, older than the pyramids, and is like old world magic flowing in your veins. It helps you strengthen and stretch all of you're core muscles and just feels really good!
Tummy exposure is completely optional. This is personal choice to help highlight certain movements but isn't essential. Please feel free to discuss any modesty concerms with me.
My aim as a Sister School is to present ATS® as I learnt it from Carolena Nericcio-Bohlman. ATS® is a beautiful and powerful style of tribal bellydance that is graceful and dynamic. In ATS®, you will learn little Lego block combinations which you click together in group (or even solo) improvisation. When you get in sync with the other dancers it's electrifying. This is an international dance language and my aim is for you to be able to dance with any ATS® dancers in the world. Come join the tribe!
